The Dos & Don'ts of Modern Chivalry

Published by: Atlas Staff
Some days, it seems like the code of honor observed by medieval knights has vanished completely. And in certain ways, that's not a bad thing. For example, most women will tell you that they don't need a knight in shining armor riding to their rescue for every little thing. And most companies' vacation policies don't cover open-ended absences so workers can launch quests for missing holy objects.

But if chivalry is dead in the modern world, it appears that not everyone got the memo. For example, back in 2002, one aspiring knight tried to escape a £25 parking ticket in a UK court by asserting his right to trial by combat. He challenged a court officer to fight him with "samurai swords, Ghurka knives, or heavy hammers." The magistrate was not amused, and slapped him with a £200 fine plus £100 in court costs.

And just this spring, a high elf slew Tolkien's dark lord Morgoth on the streets of Portland, Oregon. The only problem? The man was high on LSD, and the dark lord Morgoth was actually a woman's car with a new sword-through-the-hood ornament.

But fear not! You can tell better tales of chivalry than these with the new Once Upon a Time expansion Knightly Tales. Make up a new code of modern honor that would do the medieval knights proud, with values like "defend the downtrodden" and "offer unconditional hospitality." Perhaps your stories will inspire others to feats of legendary greatness!
